Focus On Maribou State
Maribou State, the Rich Colors from London.
Combining the dynamics of electronic music with the richness and human quality of instrumentation and singing is the challenge of Chris Davis and Liam Ivory, better known as Maribou State.
From Hertfordshire, Davis and Ivory did not know each other until university where they discovered a common passion for music.
The duo debuts on the British electronic scene in 2011 with the 5-track “Habitat” EP released on the label Fat Cat Records that already announced the color of music as rich emotionally as training.
Then, between 2012 and 2013, they will release a set of EPs on the Southern Fried Records label of the tireless Fatboy Slim. Among these “mini albums”, the EP “Tongue”, which will mark for us the full birth of their musical style with the songs “Tongue” and “Larks Rise”.
It’s finally on June 1st 2015, on the Counter Records label, that the duo will release their first album “Portraits”, inspired by their meetings and tours. Varieties of samples, rich harmonies and impeccable production work, the 10 tracks are a pure neo-soul wonder.
With this first album, Maribou State has achieved a major place in this movement, alongside the talented Jamie XX, SBTRKT and James Blake.
The songs “Steal” and “Midas”, on which the two producers collaborated with the London singer Holly Walker, are perfect examples of their artistic sensibility.
On September 7th, the duo hit again with a new big album, “Kingdoms In Color”. They inspire themself this time by their last years spent on the road around the world to offer us ever more colorful tracks. Allowing to relive their own journey.
It does not seem necessary to address a particular track, in our opinion, each of the tracks on this album deserves to be heard as soon as possible. We recommend Maribou State to anyone wishing to escape for a moment, alone or accompanied, in a musical world as vast as it is intimate.
Now, it’s time to discover their musical universe with our Spotify playlist and Soundcloud.
